Back to Canal

Prior to 1830
At the northwest corner of Canal and Market streets, where the Hotel Hart later stood, was an old log house.

Farther up Canal was the home of Mr. Rainow.

"Mammy Young" Phoebe Poyner Young lived in a log house just north of him. She was the daughter of Mrs. Dr. Joseph Sprague by her first marriage, and was one of the fugitives after the massacre at Wyoming, escaping by chance to Harrisburg. She died in 1839, age 89. She loved to tell the younger generation of hearing the night criers of the wildcats and wolves in the swamp nearly across the street from her home.
